How long you sleep is only part of the story. New research suggests a regular sleep schedule — consistent bed and wake times from one day to the next — may matter just as much as total hours in bed, and in some ways even more. In one of the largest studies on the topic, published in the journal Sleep in 2024, researchers followed more than 60,000 UK Biobank participants and found that those with the most regular sleep-wake timing carried a substantially lower risk of death over roughly six years of follow-up. Sleep regularity proved to be a stronger predictor of mortality than sleep duration itself. For readers across the Gulf juggling late social evenings, shifting work hours and family commitments, that message deserves attention.
What a regular sleep schedule means, and how scientists measure it
Scientists quantify night-to-night consistency with the Sleep Regularity Index (SRI). The metric, used in the two largest studies on the topic, captures the probability that a person is in the same state — asleep or awake — at any two time points 24 hours apart, averaged across a week of wearable accelerometer data. Scores run from 0 to 100, where 100 represents a perfectly regular pattern: the same sleep and wake timing every single day.
In the 2024 study, led by researchers at Monash University’s Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health in collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, the team calculated SRI scores from more than 10 million hours of accelerometer data in 60,977 UK Biobank participants, with an average age of about 63. The median score was 81, meaning most participants were fairly consistent — but far from perfectly so. Because the measurements came from wrist-worn devices rather than self-report, the timing data were objective, which gives the findings more weight than questionnaire-based research.
What the UK Biobank studies found
Across an average follow-up of 6.3 years, 1,859 participants died. When the researchers ranked participants by sleep regularity, a clear gradient emerged: compared with the least regular fifth of sleepers, each of the four more regular groups showed lower all-cause mortality — between 20% and 48% lower risk, depending on the group. The pattern extended to specific causes: cancer mortality was 16% to 39% lower and cardiometabolic mortality 22% to 57% lower among more regular sleepers, after adjusting for age, sex, ethnicity, sociodemographic, lifestyle and health factors.
The key point: sleep regularity was a stronger predictor of all-cause mortality than sleep duration, even when statistical models included how long people slept — a focus on hours alone may miss an important part of the picture. A related, independent analysis published in eLife in 2023 by another Monash University-led team reached similar conclusions in 88,975 UK Biobank participants: over 7.1 years of follow-up and 3,010 deaths, the most irregular sleepers faced roughly 53% higher mortality risk than the median participant (hazard ratio 1.53, 95% CI 1.41 to 1.66). Two large studies, two analytical approaches, one consistent direction: irregular sleep timing tracks with higher mortality. Studies suggest the association persists even after accounting for how long people sleep.
Why consistent timing may shape long-term health
The leading explanation is circadian biology. Every cell in the body runs on an internal timing system, and the master clock in the brain synchronizes these rhythms largely through external cues — especially light and the timing of sleep. When bed and wake times jump from day to day, the circadian system struggles to maintain stable rhythms, a state researchers call circadian disruption, which earlier work has linked to metabolic and cardiovascular strain.
The same research group tested a closely related question in a 2024 PNAS study of 88,905 participants who wore light sensors for one week: brighter daytime light and darker nights each predicted lower mortality risk, while brighter nights — the kind produced by long evening sessions under artificial light — predicted higher risk. Across about eight years of follow-up, people with the brightest daytime light exposure had roughly 17% to 34% lower all-cause mortality than those with the least, while the brightest night-time group had around 21% to 34% higher risk. The researchers concluded that regular light-dark patterns — bright days and dark nights — support circadian rhythms and may promote cardiometabolic health and longevity. A steady sleep schedule is one of the most practical ways to keep those patterns anchored.
What this means for daily life in the Gulf
The Gulf context gives these findings extra relevance. Evenings here tend to run late — gatherings, late dinners and extended family time can push bedtime well past midnight, while morning obligations stay fixed, producing short and irregular weekday sleep. Ramadan is a distinctive case: eating, prayer and sleep shift dramatically for a whole month, and many people need time to reset their schedule afterwards. Add shift work, heavy evening screen use and a hot climate that keeps people indoors — cutting exposure to the bright daytime light that helps anchor the body clock — and you have a setting where sleep regularity can quietly erode. None of this argues for dramatic lifestyle change — studies suggest something smaller and more achievable: pick a wake time you can hold every day, protect a consistent wind-down window, and keep the pattern going through weekends and holidays as best you can.
An honest look at the limitations
These findings deserve context. All three studies are observational: they show that irregular sleep tracks with higher mortality, not that irregular sleep directly causes earlier death. It is also possible that an undiagnosed illness disrupts sleep first — a problem known as reverse causation. UK Biobank volunteers are mostly middle-aged and older adults of predominantly white British ancestry and tend to be healthier than the general population, so the exact risk figures may not transfer directly to younger or more diverse Gulf populations. And sleep regularity was typically measured over just one week of device wear. Still, the consistency across two large independent analyses, objective measurements and careful adjustment for confounders makes the signal hard to dismiss. Studies suggest regularity deserves a place alongside duration and quality as a pillar of healthy sleep — not as a guaranteed shortcut to longevity.
